There was a phrase in the 1840’s that was bandied about in Europe: “A special Providence watches over children, drunkards and the United States.” While the comment was undoubtedly meant to be derogatory toward the then-young nation, there is no doubting that there was some truth to it. American history is littered with truly bizarre moments where the U.S. has managed the impossible. Whether because an accomplished enemy suddenly made a rookie mistake, an American got lucky or the weather itself interfered, the United States certainly has some colorful stories that cannot be read as anything less than divine intervention. God's Hand in American History
Thanksgiving is a unique American religious holiday. The Thanksgiving Proclamation signed by President George Washington was the first official presidential proclamation ever issued by the United States. Here is a quote from George Washington’s Proclamation: “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God. … Now, therefore, I do assign Thursday the 26th day of November next, that we may all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country. …”
There is a portion of Abraham Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation: “It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged … by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens … to set apart and observe … a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father Who dwelleth in the heavens.”
Finally, here is a quote from the Thanksgiving Proclamation signed by President Ronald Reagan: “America has much for which to be thankful. … Let us recommit ourselves to that devotion to God and family that has played such an important role in making this a great Nation, and which will be needed as a source of strength if we are to remain a great people.”
America has prospered in freedom for more than two centuries and, yes indeed, America has so much for which to thank God on Thanksgiving Day.

The true story of Thanksgiving has been obscured in most of the teachings over the decades and most likely you were taught incorrectly about what really happened just like I have been. Here’s the version you may find familiar:
The Pilgrims arrived here after an arduous trip across the Atlantic Ocean. They didn’t know where they were and were oblivious as to what to do when they got here. They basically had little to no possessions, and the Indians took pity on them. The Indians saw them, and the Indians saved them. The Indians taught ’em how to do things they didn’t know how to do, like grow food, catch beavers, stuff like that and the Pilgrims thanked them by growing a whole bunch of food and having this big feast. So, the story of Thanksgiving that is taught is basically how without the existence of the Native Americans, there wouldn’t be a country because the Pilgrims would have died. At least the Pilgrims were nice enough to pay the Indians back with a big Thanksgiving dinner.
That’s not at all what happened. It’s not even close to what happened.
